Can We Know the Future?

[T]he future is a faded song, a Royal Rose or a lavender spray
Of wistful regret for those who are not yet here to regret,
Pressed between yellow leaves of a book that has never been opened.
And the way up is the way down, the way forward is the way back.

(T.S. Eliot, Four Quartets)

You may have indulged yourself in guessing who will be our next President, or which movie will win the Oscar. If you are like me, you saw mixed results. I missed Bill Clinton, got Barack Obama right and went totally wrong when it came to Donald Trump! Sometimes, what I thought would win Best Picture turned out to win Best Actor (Eddie Redmayne as the great physicist, Stephen Hawking, in The Theory of Everything.)

However, you may be faced with a circumstance where you would really like to know, where it seems a matter of life or death. It could an ecological disaster, like fire or flood. It could be a potential act of terrorism or military action. It could even be a stock market crash. Knowing this in advance would enable you to be far more proactive in responding to the challenge. At the very least, you would have greater peace of mind going forward.

Truth: Digital Versus Analog

In our ever more digital world, we are conditioned to think in terms of probability. Any outcome can only be given as percentage points; even the most sophisticated artificial intelligence can only give approximations. There is no certainty in the digital world.

In science, even in the “Theory of Evolution” or “The Big Bang,” we always deal with tentative truth. What is true today will almost certainly not be true tomorrow. Currently, we are facing a new paradigm, or model of reality. The old Newtonian conception of the Universe as billiard balls no longer accurately describes what we know on either a stellar or microscopic level.

Analog truth points to revelation and the intuitive mind. Our left brain favors precise information chopped into minute bits, like the cars of a railroad train passing by. Our right brain favors a dramatic glimpse of the vast panorama, like an aerial shot of the entire train crossing the plain below it. The analog dimension is the perfect conduit for revelation, for anything like the Voice of God.

When Only Knowledge Will Do

When you need an accurate scorecard to boost your market performance on the Dow, that is one thing. When your wife, mother or child is in the hospital, and you have to ask the Doc, “Is it serious?”…that is quite another thing!

We all know of the scenario where an aging gentleman goes to the doctor with a diagnosis of cancer, and the M.D. advises him to put his house in order. He has only got six months to live. We now laugh, as so many people have defied this negative prophecy. Part of the reason may be that they surrendered their denial and resistance to their condition, such that their antibodies were able to perform with maximum efficiency.

When it comes to someone you love, you don’t want it to ever be a matter of guesswork. As sophisticated as you may pretend to be, you would get down on your knees and pray to God in a heartbeat if you thought it would do any good. You don’t want estimates; you want solid knowledge.

God as Infinite Love

The inestimable contribution of Christianity to the great religious traditions is its historical emphasis on the Supreme Being as a God of Love. Even though eventually this largest of religions fell into exclusivism and the suppression of our divine birthright, nothing could quite wipe out the power of God dying on the cross in the Person of Christ. Christ died for us, not because we were miserable, filthy worms, but because we were infinitely precious in His eyes.

That God is infinite love is still nothing short of revolutionary. All too many of us are stuck with a tyrant in the sky, a peeping Tom constantly prying into our private lives and frowning down on us. Like Santa Claus, he has carefully checked His sheet on who has been naughty, and who has been nice. Just wait until He comes back! Then He is going to really kick butt! After that, the gavel and the judgment. We all know what our chances are based on merit alone!

judgement

Yet, the truth is the exact opposite. God loves us, not just as a wise and compassionate Father. He loves us as His lover. It is always first love with Him. He is head over heels in love with us. This has always been the case. Nothing will ever change His heart or His mind about YOU. When you realize this, you will find that God has handed over the keys to the Kingdom.

Starting a Two-Way Dialogue

To get the knowledge you need when facing a personal or collective crisis, summon the Presence of a Loving God, a God Who adores you. If God is a hostile observer about to smash His clay figurine in pieces, that is one thing. But if God is your long lost lover, that is quite another. If you will call this God, He will fly to your side.

In truth, God has been calling you and speaking with you in various ways every single day. Chances are that you were far too busy to listen or piece together the clues. Maybe it is an impression. Maybe it is an inner prompting. Maybe it is even an inner voice. You don’t have to hallucinate an outer voice to have an authentic encounter with the Almighty.

All you have to do is call God over to you. Then ask Him an honest question or two. It may be, “Will I pull through the coming operation?” Maybe it will be on a larger scale. I recently faced a direct threat to my home town. “Will the Bay Area be consumed with fire?” No need to apologize for wanting to know. You are a son or daughter of the Living God (Supreme Being). It is only appropriate that you seek guidance.

Listening for the Inner Voice

If you keep asking God a question, and if you quiet your mind down through conscious breathing, contemplation or meditation, you will start to feel a response of some kind. It could be an impression or an idea, not altogether distinct. It might be an inner prompting to do something you weren’t planning on doing. (Many people averted boarding a certain plane fated to crash).

inner voice

It may take time for you to develop this ability full out. I have been working with this for 20 years. Only in the last several years have I been able to have full out discussions with God, and then only when I tune into God (divine frequency). Usually this is in bed before I fall asleep, or early morning when I am awake, but not ready to crawl out of bed and face the world. I am most probably in the alpha state, and my monkey mind is sufficiently subdued.

The classic analogy of a radio station applies. You may have remembered the old analog radios where you had to tune the dial. If you didn’t dial in right, you would totally miss the voice, or it would come on all blurry and confusing. It takes concentration and practice. It is interesting that Jesus Christ, throughout His earthly ministry, went up into the hills at night to commune with God. If this was true for Him, how much more so for us!

How to Know It’s Really God

You may experience accentuated thoughts, or even hear an inner dialogue. This advice might intrigue you. But how do you know you are not just wishful thinking? Is this really what God wants you to do, or is this just another good idea?

In my own experience, when God speaks to me, it is always calming, reassuring, comforting. I am under inspiration, and I feel a gush of love. I often tear up at that point. I get a sense of certainty that I hardly ever enjoy in my daily life. My faith in the Living God (Supreme energy) gets a major boost. This is my ability to know without knowing how or why.

God is about empowering you, not crushing you. God doesn’t play favorites. Jesus Christ emphasized that God’s love is like the rays of the sun shining equally on all alike. It doesn’t matter how “bad” you have been. God loves us all with an absolute love that has no conditions whatsoever. All you have to do is catch a ray or two of that spotless sunlight.

Centering in the Peace that Defies Comprehension

Chatting it up with God in an honest way may take years of inner development, but it is well worth it. You will find that whenever you ask God for help, He is always there for you. One of the last things Christ said is, “Look, I am with you always, even unto the end of the Age.” You are never really alone, even on the deathbed!

Your only point of concentration need be that God IS Love, and Love IS God. Is it true love? Then that love IS God. If you religiously focus on this, you will begin to discover that, not only is God Love, but you are, as well. Love is your essence. Love is your core. You may think that in this particular incarnation, greatness is far from you. May I repeat what an est trainer once told us: “You are so magnificent!” Let that magnificence sink in. Then go light up the world. Your world. Our world…
